James was diagnosed with Autism just before he turned two. At the time he was non verbal. His family brought him to work with the staff at CLASS INC. very shortly afterward.
Over time James began speaking but with a severe form of Apraxia. This made his words all but unintelligible to most listeners. By the age of six James was assessed for and given access to a speech technology device, which he used until he began speaking at the age of seven and a half.
CLASS INC. worked with him through his early years with PECS communication, and worked with him on his new speech technology; all while never giving up on articulation and speech production therapies.
CLASS INC. was with him the whole way. With years of working with James a genuine relationship was born between his family and the staff. So much so, that when James began exhibiting symptoms of high anxiety disorder CLASS INC. spotted it first, and were able to work closely with his family and school so that he could be properly evaluated and treated.
In James’ case that meant taking a year off of school and devoting full time to therapies. A big part of that therapy was spent at CLASS INC. During that time James made leaps and strides and this became a seed for the idea of what today has become AAC4ME. Raven knew that she was witnessing a gift and that this experience needed to be shared!
Today James McCrackyn is a happy connected 16 year old! He is quite verbal and speaks without assistance. He has also found another voice in music. In fact, he has played his guitar at open mic nights and has even performed as opening talent for the band Taco Cat!
James stays involved in CLASS INC.’s activities and is a regular participant in social groups and has formed friendships that he carries even outside of therapeutic settings.
James and Raven and CLASS INC. have become a family unit. When his mother Raven was asked what it has all meant to her, she says she doesn’t even like to think about what his life, what her life, would be like without CLASS INC. “The incredible care is unlike anywhere else in the world. It’s life changing. I don’t even want to think of us without it,” said Raven.
